Percival

Percival took a deep breath, threw back his shoulders in the manner of a would-be knight, and kissed his mother goodbye. His distraught mother slumped onto the ground and sobbed as her last son rode away.

Percival walked and ran across fresh green valleys and through thick dark forests. He stopped only long enough to ask for directions to the court of King Arthur. Then, after an exhausting week of travel young, Percival came upon a tent beside a stream. Believing the tent was a chapel, Percival stepped quietly inside. There was no altar as his mother had described in his childhood stories, but there was a beautiful young woman asleep on a thick bed of soft blankets. Misconstruing his mother’s advice, Percival strode over to the woman and kissed her freely on the lips. While he was kissing her, he noticed a sparkling green ring on one finger and he believed that it was meant for him, so he gently removed it. The young woman was so paralyzed with fear that she was unable to scream. Percival smiled, nodded politely, and left the tent.

That evening when the young woman’s lover, the Haughty Knight of the Heath, returned home, she told him about the bold intruder who had kissed her and stolen her ring. The angry lover stormed out of the tent and went in pursuit of the perpetrator.

Young Percival continued his journey, pleased with the ring that would remind him of the beautiful sleeping woman and happy that he was part of a fresh new world.

During the second week of his journey, Percival entered a clearing and saw far off in the distance a huge stone castle set high on a hill. Percival knew that he had found Camelot just as it had been described to him by the knights in the forest.

Young Percival bowed briefly to the squire at the gate and whisked past him and into the courtyard. There was a great deal of commotion going on inside the castle so Percival hung back by the door. Suddenly, a bold stranger covered in bright red armor bolted out the door passed Percival carrying King Arthur’s drinking cup. As the Knights of the Round Table argued over which one of them would pursue the thief, King Arthur raised his arms in the air to gain silence. “It is only a cup,” said the king. “I shall not sacrifice one of my knights for a mere cup.”

Upon hearing this, young Percival darted into the room. “Please, Sire,” he begged, “let me rescue your cup.”

King Arthur looked at the sturdy young man in the thick leather tunic and wrinkled his brow. “Are you prepared to die?” he asked.

“Oh, I shall not die,” replied Percival. “I shall return very soon with your cup, wearing bright red armor.”

The king chuckled and nodded his approval. “Go, my lad.”

Percival jumped up on the black stallion that the young squire had readied for him and left Camelot excited to be questing for the king’s cup. Percival
